New investigation demanded over defunct Fox charity

The controversial charity set up by Liam Fox to promote the “special relationship” with the United States should be reinvestigated by the Charity Commission, the former head of the regulator has said.

The Atlantic Bridge Education and Research Scheme, which was set up by Dr Fox when in Opposition in 1997, was wound up last month after a critical Charity Commission report last year.

The report concluded that it was too closely tied to the Conservative Party and that it had no charitable benefit.

However, the commission failed to consider other allegations raised by the original complainant, including whether, given his position as a trustee,

Dr Fox had received excessive benefits in flights, accommodation and dinners.

It also decided that it would not be appropriate
