Sean Scanlan certainly created a stir when he arrived at Glasgow’s St Aloysius’ College in the early 1960s. The school still adhered to strict Jesuit values and the teachers were perplexed by the young man who walked in with a Beatles haircut, garish gold bellbottoms and a passion for the green baize.

As he once recalled: “My mother was called in and advised that it would be in the best interests of all parties concerned if I left. So I suppose you could say I was expelled. I had been taking a lot of time off and it’s true I was more interested in snooker than books.”

He had been steered towards a career in law, yet the courtroom’s loss was the stage door’s gain
