Scotland is ditching the stereotype as the home of the deep-fried Mars bar and making “great strides” in producing and eating health food, industry leaders claimed last night.

James Withers, chief executive of the trade body Scotland Food & Drink, said stereotypes of the poor Scottish diet could be damaging as they create a self-fulfilling prophecy in which unhealthy food is deemed normal for many.
