A surgeon who is alleged to have botched operations that seriously injured or killed more than 20 patients has resumed practising against the wishes of the General Medical Council, The Times has learnt.

Gideon Lauffer, whom the regulator recommended be struck off, was suspended last year by an independent adjudication panel after the deaths of two patients. But his suspension expired six months later and the former consultant is now working in the A&E department of St Thomas’s Hospital in London.

The hospital trust said that Mr Lauffer was working under supervision and not operating on patients, but his case highlights concerns about the ability of the GMC and the NHS to deal with doctors who cause harm.
