University College London has begun talks over opening a second campus in East London.

The university, the fourth-highest- ranking UK institution in this year’s The Times Good University Guide, has begun a formal six-month consultation with Newham council to assess the project’s feasibility.

East London, an area of the capital that has already undergone rapid expansion as a result of the 2012 Olympic Games development and the Westfield Stratford shopping centre, would receive hundreds of millions of pounds of further investment if UCL goes ahead.

One option being considered is building new halls of residence for students, from which they could travel across London to its Bloomsbury campus for lectures. Stratford now enjoys excellent links to Central London.
