ITV has apologised after it accidentally broadcast a video clip taken from a computer game, claiming that the pictures were IRA footage filmed in 1988.

Exposure: Gaddafi and the IRA was the first programme in the new Exposure flagship documentary series, being shown at peak time and designed to fill the gap left by the highly regarded World in Action.

Footage from a computer game showing soldiers shooting at a helicopter, which then falls from the sky, was shown on Monday evening on ITV1 with a voiceover saying:

“With Gaddafi’s heavy machineguns it was possible to shoot down a helicopter - as the terrorists’ (IRA) own footage of 1988 shows. This was what the security forces feared most. It may have been a lucky
