Ed Miliband has said that his brother David’s dramatic exit from British politics has brought “clarity” to their relationship.

Speaking three days after the former Foreign Secretary announced he was standing down as an MP, the Labour leader said that his departure was good because it would end the “sense of uncertainty about what he was going to do”.

Ever since he won a surprise victory over his elder sibling in the 2010 leadership contest, the younger Miliband has been dogged by speculation about whether David would return to the Shadow Cabinet, or even steal his crown. His remarks suggest a sense of relief that the whispering has come to an end.
