Ronald Dworkin was the pre-eminent legal scholar of his generation, whose philosophy eschewed moral ambiguity in favour of clarity and the certainty of belief. A firm advocate of the essential unity of Anglo-American civilisation at a level deeper than either the outworn notion of a “special relationship” or the mutual embrace of shared foreign policy goals, he moved easily between Oxford, Harvard, Yale and University College London, in all of which he either studied or taught with distinction, making in the process many friends and remarkably few enemies.

Dworkin never claimed that he, or anyone, knew absolutely what was right or wrong, but he did insist that those sitting in judgment should know what they believed and defend it accordingly.
