Almost 1,000 people were injured today when a ten-tonne meteor exploded above the central Russian city of Chelyabinsk, unleashing a shock wave that shattered windows throughout the city.
Mikhail Yurevich, the Chelyabinsk regional governor, said that some 950 people were hurt by the blast although he said that two-thirds of the injuries were light wounds from pieces of glass and other materials. Other officials said that more than a dozen people were seriously injured.
The meteor appeared as a ball of fire crossing the sky this morning over the Chelyabinsk region of the Urals, 930 miles east of Moscow.
