Drug companies deliberately withhold results of adverse clinical trials from doctors and patients, MPs will be told today.

Sarah Wollaston, the Conservative MP and family doctor, will raise questions in Parliament over the way that big pharmaceutical businesses stifle bad news about the effectiveness of drugs and the risk of side-effects.

It comes as an alliance of influential doctors, scientists and academics launches a campaign to force change to ensure that doctors and patients are given access to all clinical research.

The campaign is supported by Dr Clare Gerada, president of the Royal College of General Practitioners; Dr Fiona Godlee, editor of the British Medical Journal; Dr Richard Horton, editor of The Lancet; and Sir Iain Chalmers, founder of the Cochrane Library
