Weather Eye: wet and windy once again

The jet stream has moved further south, bringing changeable weather that may affect the Paralympics

Here we go again — after a miraculously sunny and warm Olympics for much of the time, this week we will see the return of heavy rains and strong winds. The blame for this lies with the jet stream, again, the river of wind that powers overhead and helps to spawn and steer depressions that bring wet and windy weather.

The record-breaking rains over the first half of this summer were the result of the jet stream aiming straight for the UK. Over the Olympic fortnight the jet stream migrated north, but now it has slipped back south again and is plaguing the UK with yet more wind and rain. And it looks as if the jet stream is here to stay for the rest
