Britain will veto any further expansion of the European Union unless far tighter controls are placed on the “vast migrations” of European workers, David Cameron warned yesterday.

In a threat designed to force through far-reaching changes to the EU’s immigration rules, the Prime Minister said that there must be no repeat of “the big movements of populations we’ve seen in the past”.

It marks a serious escalation of his battle with Europe over mass migration and comes as a host of countries, led by Serbia, are queuing up to join the EU. Albania, Bosnia, Turkey and Macedonia are also lobbying for membership.

“The EU’s founding fathers simply did not envisage that the accession of new countries would trigger mass population movements across Europe,” Mr Cameron
