Fanatics nailed to cross suffer to mark Christ’s sacrifice

More than 20 Roman Catholic fanatics had themselves nailed to crosses in farming regions outside San Fernando, north of Manila, the Philippines capital, today to mark the day that Jesus Christ was crucified.

One man was taken away by ambulance after he suffered heavy bleeding from having his feet nailed to a cross.

Since the ceremonies have become something of a tourist attraction, attended by as many as 3,000 spectators in one village, the acts are supervised by local government officials and medical treatment is on standby.

The gruesome re-enactments of nailing hands and often feet to a cross happens every Good Friday in the Philippines, Asia’s largest Catholic outpost with about 75 million Roman Catholic followers.
