Nadiya Hussain, the 2015 winner of The Great British Bake Off, is to go to Mecca with an all-Muslim television crew to make a BBC1 documentary about the hajj, the annual pilgrimage to the Muslim holy city in Saudi Arabia.

“Hajj is one of the most intense and emotional experiences you can undertake,” said Hussain, who made the pilgrimage in 2013 with her husband before she became a TV celebrity.

The trip has taken months to set up because of the need to employ an all-Muslim crew and obtain filming permits from the Saudi government.

Hussain, who last year presented The Chronicles of Nadiya from Bangladesh, where she traced her family’s roots and cooked local food, will act as “a witness” for British viewers, most
