Theresa May wrote to Donald Trump last month invoking the spirit of Winston Churchill to convince the president-elect to revive the importance of the special relationship between Britain and America.

In a letter dated December 29, the prime minister hoped that Mr Trump had “managed to find some time to pause and spend time with your family over the holiday season” and explained that she was sending him the gift of a Christmas address to the American people in 1941 from “perhaps the most famous British-American, Winston Churchill”. She said that “the sentiment he expressed — of a sense of unity and fraternal association between the United Kingdom and United States — is just as true today as it has ever been”.
