A Syrian refugee has been arrested in Germany over an alleged plot to disguise as many as eight vehicles as police cars and pack them full of explosives for attacks in western Europe.

Named only as Hasan A, the unemployed 38-year-old was allegedly in contact with a member of Islamic State via the mobile phone message service Telegram asking for €180,000 to fund a bombing campaign, prosecutors said.

Armed police raided his apartment in Saarbruecken, near the French border, at around 2am on Saturday. He was detained before being formally arrested on terror financing charges on Sunday.

The man’s “as yet undefined attack scenario” suggested the deployment of vehicles packed with explosives in Germany, France, Belgium and The Netherlands, police said.
