This week marks my first anniversary of listening to Melvyn Bragg’s Radio 4 show, In Our Time, every day for a year.

The show’s format is simple. With no theme tune, introduction or preamble, Melvyn Bragg will suddenly appear on air and immediately get heavy on your ass with: “Hello. What is light?” Or, “Hello. At 5 o’clock in the morning on February 13th, 1692, the MacDonalds of Glencoe were massacred by the Scottish army.”

While you’re still going, “Shit! I don’t know!” or, “Man! That’s harsh!”, Melvyn will introduce three experts on the topic who, for the next 45 minutes, will discuss the subject with such knowledge, insight and verve that you will walk away at the end with your head notably bigger
