They’re young, macho men who play sport, go to the pub, banter with their mates – and never talk about their feelings of depression and despair. Until now. Ben Machell reports on a hidden mental-health crisis

Aaron Watson is 25 years old, comes from Manchester and is, by his own reckoning, “a typical northern lad. Loud, brash and confident. Quite macho, really.” He is a fan of mixed martial arts, enjoys playing football and rugby and has boxed since the age of 12, earning a reputation as an accomplished amateur. “I’m a light-middleweight,” he says. “I had quite a few fights and I really loved it. Watson worked as a firefighter before, last year, moving to Bedfordshire to become an emergency planning officer, a disaster-management role of some responsibility.
