Downing Street hit back at Jean-Claude Juncker yesterday after he claimed that borders were the “worst invention ever”.

The comments from the European Commission president risked intensifying a row over levels of migration across Europe after the refugee crisis and Britain’s vote to leave the EU.

“Borders are the worst invention ever made by politicians,” Mr Juncker told the Alpbach Media Academy. He also called for more solidarity to be shown to refugees and their children.
