More than 70 people have died after an earthquake hit central Italy early this morning.
The 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit at 3.30am local time about 65 miles northeast of Rome, bringing down buildings and trapping people under the rubble. Italy’s Civil Protection Agency said 73 people had been killed but the death toll is expected to rise.
Many people are still believed to be buried under ruins.
Paul O’Halloran, from Cork in Ireland, was in Rome when the earthquake struck. People in Umbria, the region affected, told him that emergency services had stopped using mechanical equipment because they can’t hear people under the rubble.
