New York is launching a campaign against men who hog too much space on subway trains by sitting with their legs out wide — a menace that has become known as “manspreading”.

“Courtesy counts: manners make a better ride,” a publicity drive by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will remind male New Yorkers.

One poster will single out the scourge of manspreading, described by The New York Times as “the lay-it-all-out sitting style that more than a few men see as their inalienable underground right”.

The advert will depict passengers being forced to stand as a man sits in such a way that he takes up two seats.
