More than 120 London-based bankers working for Goldman Sachs shared payouts worth more than £350 million, making the Wall Street investment bank’s most senior staff by far the best-paid in the City, according to newly disclosed figures.

The so-called “code staff” of the British division of Goldman Sachs earned on average just over £3 million, double the amount earned by their peers at the likes of Barclays, JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley, highlighting the pay gap it has opened up with its rivals.

The share-and-cash payouts meant that the 121 bankers shared a bonus pool worth £367 million, nearly £200 million greater than the £180 million pot shared between the 110 code staff of Bank of America Merrill Lynch, the second highest bank, according to
