Spain monitors 50 for ebola amid fears over hospital safety

Spanish health authorities were monitoring more than 50 people for signs of ebola last night after a nurse in Madrid became the first person to become infected on European soil.

The European Commission demanded an explanation from the Spanish government as to how Teresa Romero Ramos, 44, had caught ebola while treating two missionaries who were repatriated from Africa. They later died.

As she remained in a stable condition at Carlos III Hospital, three other people — her husband, Javier Limón, another nurse and a Spanish engineer who had visited Nigeria — were placed in quarantine and tested for the virus. The nurse was later given the all-clear.
