The new chairman of Ofsted is the former head of a courier group who helps run a struggling chain of academies.

David Hoare, the chairman of the Teenage Cancer Trust, was announced this morning as the new chair of the education regulator.

Baroness Morgan, the Labour peer who has been chair since 2011, did not have her contract renewed. She claimed she was the victim of a determined effort from Downing Street to appoint more Tories, although a spokesman for the prime minister said it was entirely the decision of Michael Gove, the former education secretary.

Mr Hoare is a trustee of Academies Enterprise Trust, which runs more than academies but has been stopped from taking on any further schools, and he is stepping down
