A “weather bomb” is on its way to batter Britain, with extreme weather warnings issued by the Met Office yesterday.

Winds reaching 80mph were predicted last night as forecasters warned that Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England and Wales can expect severe gales until tomorrow.

The rapid cyclogenesis — known as a ‘’weather bomb’’ — is a deep low pressure system moving slowly eastwards between Scotland and Iceland.

A Met Office forecaster said: “This cyclogenesis is happening above Iceland, a long way away, but its influence is being felt across the UK.”

He added: “There is currently an amber weather warning over northwest Scotland warning people to be prepared and a yellow warning reminding people to be aware.”
