The woes of crisis-stricken Tesco have deepened with new figures suggesting that shoppers are shunning the supermarket chain in ever greater numbers in favour of rivals such as Waitrose, Asda, Aldi and Lidl.

Tesco’s sales fell by 3.6 per cent to £7.01 billion over the 12 weeks to October 13 according to Kantar Worldpanel, in spite of overall growth in grocery spending of 0.7 per cent across the country. Its decline was worse than any of its rivals and its market share fell from 30.1 per cent to 28.8 per cent.

However, Tesco will take heart from the fact that its decline has slightly slowed – for the preceding period, its till roll had been down by 4.5 per cent.
