Europe stalls as booming Britain takes off IMF

Britain is booming and leaving behind most of the world’s leading economies, the International Monetary Fund declared yesterday while sounding the alarm about the prospects for the eurozone.

The UK economy will grow faster than any other G7 nation, expanding by 3.2 per cent this year and 2.7 per cent next year.

“Among advanced countries, the United States and the United Kingdom in particular are leaving the financial crisis behind and achieving decent growth,” Olivier Blanchard, the IMF chief economist, said.

His comments come 17 months after Mr Blanchard told George Osborne to scale back his austerity programme, claiming that the chancellor was “playing with fire”, souring relations between the UK and the global body.
