More than 10,000 homeless demonstrators protested outside Sao Paulo’s World Cup stadium against what they perceive as wasteful spending on the £300 million arena, just a week before Brazil hosts the football tournament.

It came as a strike on the city’s underground train network caused traffic chaos that ensnared football bigwigs, including Michel Platini, president of the Union of European Football Associations, who took almost three hours to reach his hotel.

The Homeless Workers’ Movement said 12,000 people marched on the Arena Corinthians — which will host the opening match of the tournament between Brazil and Croatia in a week’s time — on Wednesday night.

The peaceful march shut down one of the main transport hubs in Brazil’s largest city days after President Rousseff had
