David Cameron today insisted that there are “no surprises” in his tax returns, but refused to commit to publishing them.

The Tory leader impressed there are “no secrets” about his tax affairs, but would not support plans made by No 10 in 2012 for the prime minister and senior cabinet ministers to release their personal tax returns.

He said his only income derives from his job as prime minister, for which he is “paid handsomely”, and from rental income from his home, which he has leased since moving into Downing St in 2010.

Speaking at an event in Ipswich, Mr Cameron said: “I don’t have other sources of income so there are no surprises there in my tax return but I’m very relaxed and nothing
