The Queen urged caution yesterday before the Scottish independence referendum, in the latest sign that Buckingham Palace is hoping for a “no” vote in Thursday’s poll.

The Queen told wellwishers as she left morning service at a church near Balmoral that she hoped people would “think very carefully about the future” before voting.

It is the first time that she has publicly addressed independence. Her comment came after calls from Unionists for her to speak out in favour of their side. Alex Salmond said yesterday, however, that he believed she would be “proud” to reign in an independent Scotland.
