Britain’s best-known fertility doctor has thrown his weight behind a change to the law that would allow doctors to create babies with three people’s DNA.

Lord Winston said that “nobody in the medical community” would wish to deny patients access to the novel IVF technique, which could prevent mothers from passing incurable genetic illnesses to their children.

The Labour peer also criticised MPs opposing the proposals for “quoting him out of context”, leading to an impression that the medical establishment has serious reservations about so-called three-parent IVF.
