Christians in Iraq are “very near” the end after many fled the north of the country last week, the “Bishop of Baghdad” said today.

Canon Andrew White, speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today, said huge numbers had fled the northern city of Mosul after being given an ultimatum to convert, pay a tax or be killed.

Canon White, who got his nickname for his work at St George’s church, the only Anglican church in Iraq, said people were trapped in the desert with nowhere to go.

He said: “Things are so desperate, our people are disappearing.

“We have had people massacred, their heads chopped off.

“Are we seeing the end of Christianity? We are committed come what may, we will keep going to the end,
