David Cameron has been stung by a jellyfish while swimming in the sea off Lanzarote.

In a sign that his quest to win over floating voters may have gone too far, the prime minister was assaulted by the creature after ignoring warnings from fellow bathers.

The incident took place on Arrieta beach on the Spanish island, where he has been taking a holiday with his wife and three children. The family have been staying in a restored 18th century farmhouse for their Easter break.

Fellow tourists told the Daily Mirror that Mr Cameron, who is a keen swimmer, ignored advice from other sunbathers to watch out for the jellyfish.
