The pay gap is closing, gender roles are changing and both men and women walk out the door armed with a briefcase in the morning. So why are men still expected to pay on the first date?

When it comes to the bill sitting on the restaurant table, it seems tradition dies hard. In a survey last week, 77 per cent of men and women thought only the man should pay.

One in five believed daters should “go Dutch”, while 4 per cent said it was time women handed over their credit cards and paid for the whole thing.
