Weiwei sends art on surveillance from his monitored home to Yorkshire

One of the world’s most renowned artists, who is banned from leaving his home country of China, has chosen to host his next exhibition in a “sort of field” in Yorkshire.

Ai Weiwei, whose last work exhibited in Britain consisted of thousands of porcelain sunflower seeds scattered in Tate Modern, has allowed the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to exhibit several of his works.

The artist, who has had his passport confiscated by the Chinese authorities since he was imprisoned there in 2011, is recognised as both one of the world’s most famous dissidents and one of the most important living artists. His activities and art defy China’s authorities.
