Gordon Brown is to step up his role in the campaign to keep Scotland in the union after signs of growing support for independence.

The former prime minister is to become more heavily involved in the campaign ahead of September’s referendum after being identified as a “star striker” to persuade undecided voters to back the union.

Mr Brown is a staunch supporter of keeping Scotland in the UK, but has so far only played a walk-on part with the cross-party Better Together campaign. He gave his first speech for the group in March, in which he warned Scots of the pension deficit “time bomb” they would face under independence.
