The leaders of al-Qaeda in Syria pleaded with Isis for the release of Alan Henning in the days after his capture.

Representatives from a number of other rebel factions, including Jabhat al-Nusra, the al-Qaeda affiliate, went to negotiate with the men from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

However they were told by his captors that they believed Henning was a spy because his passport had an electronic chip in it, according to Bilal Abdul Kareem, a journalist.

“One of the other Muslims from the convoy said: ‘All of the passports from the UK are like that’, showing him his UK passport,” Mr Kareem wrote in his blog, but it did not do any good.
