Seventeen years ago, Peter McGraith met David Cabreza. They’ve been together ever since, have two children and steady jobs but, unlike most couples, haven’t had the legal right to marry until today. They did so at the first opportunity: when the clock struck midnight and the law changed.

At 12.01 this morning, surrounded by friends, family and the world’s media, Peter and David were pronounced husband and husband by a registrar at Islington Town Hall in North London. The gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell was the couple’s witness. It was a historic event.
