Marriage certificates will be updated to include the names of the couple’s mothers, the prime minister has announced, in a move to end an inequality that dates back to early Victorian times.

Currently, only the couple’s fathers and their professions are listed on marriage registers. More than 70,000 people have signed a petition calling for the forms to be modernised, stating that marriage should not be seen as a “business transaction” between two fathers.

David Cameron today said that he has asked the Home Office to look into adding mothers’ names.

“The content of marriage registers in England and Wales has not changed since the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign,” he said in a speech to the Relationships Alliance.
