The woman killed by a lorry as she cycled through London on Friday has been named as a German arts student who had only been in Britain for one month on a volunteering project.

Janina Gehlau, 26, was run over by a skip lorry at Ludgate Circus in London on Friday, a junction earmarked for a safety upgrade under cycle improvement plans.

She was treated on the scene for cardiac arrest and died in hospital on Monday with her family by her bedside, police said.

City of London Police named Mrs Gehlau yesterday and a spokesman said: “The 26 year old was a full-time history of the arts masters degree student from Dusseldorf and was in London completing a three-month volunteer project for her dissertation.”
