Pavement parking

A national law that makes our pavements safer — as already exists in London — is long overdue

Sir, Pavement parking affects people across the country. For many people — including those who have sight loss, parents with babies or toddlers in buggies, and wheelchair users — this is a serious problem. For someone who is blind, having to step off the pavement into the road because of a badly parked car can be extremely frightening.

Drivers in London may only park on pavements if they have a valid reason for doing so, such as businesses loading and unloading goods, or if the council has provided a specific exemption. This system — which has been in place for 40 years — has proved effective.

Today our politicians will have the chance to support a private member’s bill that proposes a sensible way forward:
