Losing weight is likely to make you healthier, but not always happier, according to scientists. The study of nearly 2,000 overweight and obese adults found that those who lost more than 5 per cent of their body weight over four years were more likely to suffer from depression or low mood – despite showing improvements to physical health.

The findings highlight the need to provide psychological support to those who are aiming to lose significant amounts of weight, the authors said.

Sarah Jackson, who led the work at University College London, said: “We do not want to discourage anyone from trying to lose weight, which has tremendous physical benefits, but people should not expect weight loss to instantly improve all aspects of life.”
