A happy old age appears to protect against physical decline, the most miserable older people being almost twice as likely to develop problems with everyday tasks such as dressing and washing, a study has found.

A vicious circle of unhappiness caused by illness leading to more health problems could explain why some older people decline so sharply after a taking a knock, scientists said, and helping the elderly stay happy could help to ease the burden on the NHS.
