The steel industry, trade unions and opposition MPs have rounded on the government after Tata Steel confirmed 1,050 more redundancies, taking the job toll in the industry to more than 6,000 in the past six months.

While Angela Eagle, the shadow business secretary, accused ministers of complacency, even the Tata Steel boss who signed off on the job losses — 750 of them at the giant Port Talbot works in south Wales — demanded that the government take urgent action.

After the prime minister claimed that the government had taken multiple actions to help the industry on energy prices, UK procurement and Chinese stock dumping, he was called out by Ms Eagle, who said that little had been achieved.
