Anyone who has used a budget airline knows that the cost of tickets can fluctuate, for reasons beyond understanding. So how can the frustrated traveller ensure that they get the best possible price?

Now an economics professor has found a simple solution: just book ten days before take-off.

Claudio Piga, Professor of Economics at Keele University, conducted extensive research into the cost of tickets through Ryanair, the Irish budget airline. He found that those ordering seven weeks before departure pay more than most, as they guarantee their seat on a desired flight.
