The teacher who planned the doomed ferry trip on which hundreds of teenagers are feared to have drowned took his own life yesterday, saying that he felt responsible for South Korea’s worst maritime disaster in decades.

The guilt-racked suicide of Kang Min Kyu was the most unexpected death in a tragedy that is known to have claimed at least 28 lives, left a nation stunned and could end with a death toll of nearly 300, according to rescuers.

Mr Kang, 52, the deputy head of Danwon high school, was among the 174 people rescued from the Sewol ferry on Wednesday morning while hundreds of students and other passengers remained trapped inside the vessel.
