Vince Cable and his senior departmental officials are to endure trial by MPs over the sale of Royal Mail after the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee announced that it was to reopen its inquiry into the divisive privatisation.

The hearing this month will be followed eight days later by the start of an inquiry by the powerful Public Accounts Committee into the flotation of the state postal network.

The select committee, which succeeded in embarrassing Dr Cable over his handling of the Royal Mail sale at two previous hearings, is calling the Business Secretary back after the flotation was heavily criticised in a report by the National Audit Office.
