Many more women and younger people will be told they are at risk of heart disease after a major overhaul of medical guidance.

Doctors will warn people if their “heart age” is older than their chronological age in an attempt to head off emerging problems much earlier in life. Some people could start taking statins in their 30s as the NHS is advised to shift towards considering people’s lifetime risk of heart disease, rather than simply their chance of a heart attack within ten years.
