A deepening spat between the business secretary and the head of the CBI has flared again.

The head of the bosses’ group has hit out at Sajid Javid lecturing his colleagues on the European Union as though they were “a bunch of schoolchildren”.

In his first comments since taking over as president, Paul Drechsler also chided the government on its “tone” in the debate on continuing EU membership, warning voters would be swayed by anti-Brussels rhetoric.

Mr Javid has declined to back down from a rebuke to the CBI last month that its negotiating stance on the EU was akin to “the rules of this club need to change but don’t worry we’ll always be members no matter what”.
