An attempt by Chris Huhne, the disgraced former Cabinet minister, to blame a conspiracy by the “Murdoch press” for his downfall was met with derision and disbelief yesterday.

Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader, was among those to admit he did not share Huhne’s view that newspaper revelations stating that he had passed speeding points to his wife were “payback” for his support for a phone-hacking investigation.

Huhne and his ex-wife, Vicky Pryce, the economist, were both sentenced to eight months in prison after being found guilty of perverting the course of justice. They each served two months before being released.
